Assistant Professor,

The University of Alabama, Center for the Prevention of Youth Behavior Problems

The Center for the Prevention of Youth Behavior Problems (CPYBP) at The University of Alabama has an opening for a tenure-track faculty position starting August 16, 2008, subject to the availability of funding. Responsibilities include development of a research program with the potential for external funding, undergraduate and graduate teaching, and research supervision. Candidates should possess a Ph.D. in their discipline and should demonstrate clear potential for distinguished scientist careers. This faculty person can be from a range of disciplines and departments, including clinical, developmental or social psychology, from human development and family relations, or from criminal justice. It is expected that the faculty person’s research may focus on topics such as the exploration of psychophysiological and hormonal correlates of antisocial behavior, and decision-making with children having disinhibition and attentional problems. This faculty person could have expertise in social-cognitive, psychophysiological, emotion regulation, behavioral inhibition, and neuropsychological research. We anticipate that this faculty person will be developing and submitting grant proposals in this area of research, both as a lead investigator and in collaboration with other investigators.

Although the faculty position is located in the CPYBP, the faculty person will be expected to have his/her academic appointment within one of the university’s departments. The faculty person will be actively involved in teaching about various aspects of biopsychosocial processes relevant in their chosen academic department at the undergraduate and graduate student level, in formal courses and with students working on research in the faculty member’s lab.

The CPYBP currently consists of two tenured faculty, two research scientists, and research personnel including a project coordinator, a data analyst, research assistants and an administrative assistant. The Core and Affiliated faculty can come from several colleges and schools within the University, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Human Environmental Studies (Department of Human Development and Family Studies), College of Communication, the Culverhouse School of Business, the School of Social Work, the College of Education, and the College of Community Health Sciences.

The research focus for the Center broadly addresses basic research and applied intervention research, with a particular emphasis on youth antisocial behavior. The foci includes translational research on: (1) risk factors, and factors which moderate risk-to-outcome relationships, (2) conceptually-important causal and mediating processes which can be hypothesized to influence changes in risk behaviors and in antisocial outcomes, (3) intervention trial efficacy research, examining mediating processes and moderating variables, and (4) research on the effectiveness and dissemination of preventive intervention programs in community settings. The Center currently has six federally-funded grant projects addressing these topics.
